1) Cheongnyeongpo Exile Site (청령포)

  • History & Atmosphere: Surrounded on three sides by the deep Seogang River and backed by steep cliffs, Cheongnyeongpo served as an inescapable "inland island" prison for the 15-year-old deposed King Danjong in 1457. Visitors must take a short ferry ride to enter.

  • Key Highlights:

    • Manghyangtap (Stone Pagoda): Built stone-by-stone by Danjong while pining for his young queen left behind in the capital (Hanyang).

    • Gwaneumsong Pine Tree: A 600-year-old pine tree said to have "listened to and observed" (Gwan-Eum) Danjong’s grief.

2) Gwanpungheon & Jagyuru Pavilion (관풍헌 & 자규루)

  • History & Atmosphere: When severe flooding struck Cheongnyeongpo, King Danjong was relocated to Gwanpungheon, the guest house of the local government office. It was here that he composed tragic poetry (Jagyu-si) comparing his fate to a lonely cuckoo bird, before his short life came to an end at age 16.

3) Jangneung Royal Tomb (장릉 - UNESCO World Heritage)

  • History & Atmosphere: Following Danjong’s execution, an imperial decree forbade anyone from retrieving his body under penalty of death. Eom Heung-do, a loyal local official, risked his life to secretly recover the body at night and buried it here. The tomb honors both the king and the faithful people who protected his memory.
